Wiki Version:
I made this OLS_tutorial Stata file for some students who were new to programming and needed some additional explanation to supplement their understanding of the coding syntax they learned in class. I thought I would begin sharing the programs that I made for them here on OSF, in case others find it useful. The program provides detailed explanations of how to run an OLS regression in Stata and how to export the results in a formatted table in Word. I also explain model assumptions and outline methods for checking these assumptions. You can visit my blog for brief walk-through of the program by going to https://stellamindemography.wordpress.com The tutorial assumes that you have some foundational understanding in how to code in Stata, such as generating new variables from existing variables, opening and saving data files, and generating descriptive statistics. The data that I use in the tutorial are from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1997. You can learn more about the data by visiting the NLSY website at https://www.bls.gov/nls/nlsy97.htm. Most of the data used in this tutorial are from the year 2015. I included a Stata program (nsly97_build), which shows the user how the variables were created. I also included a zip folder (nlsy97_basic), which includes all of the original files used in this tutorial.
