Wiki Version:
Smoking rates are exceptionally high amongst the homeless (50-80%) and the harms of smoking are likely to be exacerbated in this group due to poor cardiac and respiratory health. Engagement with health services, including stop smoking services, is generally poor amongst this population, although desire to stop smoking is no different to the general population. Homeless support services have a duty of care to provide health service information to their service users, with the aim of enabling people to make sound choices about their health and wellbeing. Homeless services have been providing this type of support for housing, food, alcohol and illicit drugs for many years. To date, there is no nationally representative evidence on how smoking cessation is supported across homeless support services. This is the proposal for an 8-month survey capturing the smoking and e-cigarette policies and support offered across homeless charities within the UK at national and local levels. The outcome will be to produce a report on the state of smoking policies and practices within UK homeless centres and identify cases of good practice. The objectives of this project are: • To document the smoke free, e-cigarette and cessation support policies of major UK based homeless charities (e.g., Shelter, St Mungo’s, Centrepoint, Emmaus) at a national level. • To survey the local smoke free, e-cigarette and cessation support policies and practices at local homeless support services (i.e. specific sites that may be part of a larger charity such as St Mungo’s or smaller independent services), from a nationally representative sample from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. • To present a nationally representative picture of how smoking cessation is being supported in homeless support services, to identify good practice and areas for improvement. • Where good practice is identified (defined as including screening smokers, policy to support cessation and developed relationships with or referrals to SSS) we will interview caseworkers to develop a final report including evidence of good practice. ![Project logo][1] [1]: https://files.osf.io/v1/resources/ncmkj/providers/osfstorage/5e5ce9e4ef5d89023c06abc3?mode=render
