Description: This projects consists on a smart wheelchair design based on implementing eight cameras placed around the frame of a customized version of a commercially available one. The purpose of this research is to improve the life quality of those individuals with limited mobility. The design of this Autonomous wheelchair consists of multiple arrays of cameras placed around the frame of the wheelchair to achieve close to a 360-degree view, DC gear motor, motor controller, emergency switch, processor, etc. The wheelchair has a manual control that consists of controlling the wheelchair with a joystick placed near the arm rest. It can also be controlled by the embedded computer, allowing the wheelchair to navigate autonomously around its environment. The initial research goal was to design a wheelchair capable of controlling itself through an indoor hospital facility and any other indoor location while also economically accessible to a broader range of users, not only those wealthy few. All the project design files have been granted an open-source license and can be reproduced publicly.
