# Evaluating View Management for Situated Visualization in Web-based Handheld AR ## Study Protocol ### Phase 1: Informed Consent Participants were given an electronic informed consent form and approved it by writing their name and clicking on a "submit" button. The responses were collected using Google Forms. ### Phase 2: Timed Trials In this phase, participants performed a sequence of timed tasks and answered multiple-choice questions. The tasks were based on the following types: * **Navigation tasks**: Finding a specific visualization target in the participant's environment. * **Analytical tasks**: Responding to a question by reading data from a visualization in the environment. The questions in our experiment all correspond to features of a synthetic public safety dataset. This dataset comprised spatially-tagged falling accident events on a university campus with the following features: * **Time** of accident * **Setting** of accident * Weather * Season * Year * **Victim** * Gender * Role within the institution * **Injury severity** of accident ### Phase 3: Self-Reported Performance Measures This survey was heavily based on NASA-TLX and was asked for each technique individually. The reponses were collected using Google Forms. * **General Effort** (0-100; very low to very high) * *How hard did you have to work (mentally and physically) to accomplish your level of performance?* * **Mental Extertion** (0-100) * *How much mental and perceptual activity was required? Was the task easy or demanding, simple or complex?* * **Physical Exertion** (0-100) * *How much physical activity was required? Was the task easy or demanding, slack or strenuous?* * **Stress Level** (0-100) * *How irritated, stressed, and annoyed versus content, relaxed, and complacent did you feel during the task?* * **Time Pressure** (0-100) * *How much time pressure did you feel due to the pace at which the tasks or task elements occurred? Was the pace slow or rapid?* * **Perceived Success** (0-100) * *How successful were you in performing the task? How satisfied were you with your performance?* ### Phase 4: Ranked Voting Participants were asked to rank different techniques. The responses were collected using Google Forms. There were two different votes: * **Navigation techniques**: Rank the following techniques in order of your preference. * Control: **Ring marker** (blue ring marker highlight) * **Guided tour** (with arrow) * **World in miniature** (3D map) * **Analysis techniques**: Rank the following techniques in order of your preference. * Control: **3D chart** (VRIA) * **Shadowbox (unfolded)** * **Shadowbox (folded, interior projection)** * **Shadowbox (folded, inverted exterior projection)** ### Phase 5: Free-Form Feedback Here participants were given the chance to provide free-form feedback on various aspects of their experiences. The responses were collected using Google Forms.
