Wiki Version:
Poster Session B (Friday 12-2PM EDT) I am happy to answer questions via OSF comments or email (sarahhl@usc.edu). Abstract: How do cues beyond the verb modulate expectation about a changed end state? This study investigates how event representations are modulated by (1) tense (past vs. future), (2) real-world knowledge, and (3) information-structure (topicality). We investigate this with activity verbs (verbs of impact by contact, e.g. *hit*) that do not entail/require that the object changes state. Results from a lexical decision experiment show that the strength of tense cues is modulated by event type based on real world knowledge. We conclude that the impact of tense is not equal for all event types, even within a linguistically uniform verb class.
