Wiki Version:
This is the dataset corresponding to the paper "Political Pressure on Central Banks" by Carola Binder. The working paper is available here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3244148. Note that the dataset has been updated since the working paper was written. The dataset is a quarterly balanced panel covering 118 central banks from 2010Q1 through 2019Q1. It was constructed using a narrative approach, by hand-coding reports from Business Monitor International and Economist Intelligence Unit. The key variable is "Pressure," which takes value 0 if there was no report of political pressure on the central bank in that quarter, 1 if the central bank was reportedly facing but resisting pressure, and 2 if the central bank was reportedly succumbing to pressure. See working paper for complete details. You are free to use the data. Please cite the working paper. Send questions or comments to cbinder1@haverford.edu.
