Wiki Version:
Verbal aspect influences expectations about discourse continuations (Kehler et al., 2008; Ferretti et al., 2009). We present evidence from two Visual-World experiments testing for anticipatory looks to available referents following descriptions of completed (perfective) versus ongoing (imperfective) transfer of possession events ("Donald brought/was bringing Melissa a fancy drink"). We observe a bias to look at the Goal argument following completed, but not following incomplete, events before a subsequent pronoun is encountered. This suggests that comprehenders use available cues to generate discourse-level expectations about upcoming referents, and that these predictions, not just integration, affect reference processing. -- Theres Grüter, PhDAssociate ProfessorDirector of the Center for Second Language Research (CSLR)Department of Second Language StudiesUniversity of Hawai‘i at Mānoa1890 East-West RoadHonolulu, HI 96822 USA http://theresgruter.homestead.com (http://theresgruter.homestead.com)
