Ecologically momentary assessment (EMA) is a method to evaluate hearing aids in real life. However, in previous EMA studies surprisingly few negative ratings on hearing aid satisfaction have been found (Schinkel-Bielefeld, Forum Acousticum 2020). One reason for this may be that subjects try not to stay in dissatisfactory situations, but modify or leave these situations. Such modifications can be conscious (e.g. increasing the volume of the TV) or subconscious (e.g. leaning forward to increase SNR). This study investigated how often subjects encountered situations they wanted to change, how often and in what respect they consciously modified the situation, and how much this improved the listening situation. Therefore, we performed an EMA study with 9 bilateral experienced hearing aid users (age 53-89, mean hearing loss 41 dB). Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the fitting of hearing aids was done contactless. Prefitted hearing aids and a smartphone with preinstalled EMA app was sent to test participants. Fine tuning was performed remotely using the Signia app. After instructions and training, participants used the EMA app for three weeks to report about situations they changed or would have liked to change. Except for one participant who encountered in total 60 difficult situations, there were on average 1.9 such situations reported per week. Six participants reported to have experienced fewer difficult situations during the study due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Participants were able to change 77% of difficult listening situations. Only in 5% subjects continued a conversation elsewhere and in less than 1% they left the situation completely. Changes were usually done in the first 30 minutes of the situation, in 27% within less than 5 minutes.
