Wiki Version:
In 2013, the American Psychological Association (APA) published its guidelines for undergraduate psychology curriculum. The second goal, improving scientific inquiry and critical thinking, specifically mentions how Baccalaureate students should be able to demonstrate psychological information literacy (IL). Prior efforts have already been published on how to integrate IL into psychology undergraduate curriculum; much of these efforts have focused on how to summarize, evaluate and incorporate psychological sources and research. Other aspects of IL, such as: locating relevant scholarship, understanding the value of different information sources, and evaluating research in terms of bias and replicability, are also integral to a more comprehensive understanding of psychological science. The goal of this project was to develop a curriculum, covering all aspects of IL, which could be integrated into any current introductory psychology class without significant alterations to class content. Changes in objective and subjective measures of IL suggest that the specialized curriculum improved IL knowledge and skills moreso than the general science-based curriculum typical in introductory psychology courses. This IL curriculum includes: a set of online mini-lectures, a classroom activity addressing misinformation, and a scaffolded semester-long project on gathering, evaluating and disseminating psychological research. This curriculum was launched in two introductory psychology courses in Fall 2022, and data collection was completed in December 2022. You can find the raw, de-identified data, SAS syntax file and a pdf of the results as of July 2023.
