This project is looking at whether people adjust their language style after their gender identity has been threatened.
## Precarious Manhood
Previous research (e.g., [Vandello, Bosson, Cohen, Burnaford, & Weaver, 2008][1]) has indicated that men will exaggerate their masculine behavior after their masculinity has been challenged.
## Gendered Language Style
Sex differences in language use have been observed across large datasets ([Newman, Groon, Hendelman, & Pennebaker, 2008][2]), in Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count ([LIWC][3]) function word categories. Some of our recent work has found that people perceive other who use particularly feminine or masculine styles differently depending on the context — people with masculine styles are viewed as lower in status when giving advice about relational issues.
