Description: Original Study - Conditional Process Analysis. In this paper we analyzed self-explanation data from Schwaighofer, Bühner, Greiff, & Fischer (2016). We tested whether the effect of worked examples on learning gains (application-oriented knowledge in statistics) is mediated by self-explanation quality. We included the moderating variables Schwaighofer et al. investigated: prior knowledge, executive functions and fluid intelligence and explored if the indirect effect is contingent on any of these factors. We used conditional process analysis (Hayes, 2018) to jointly model mediating and moderating factors while Schwaighofer et al. (2016) investigated only the impact of moderating variables.
