Interdependence Theory states that 6 dimensions describe differences between social situations. We find that people (insitu and exsitu) can reliably differentiate situations according to 5, but not 6, dimensions of interdependence: (1) mutual dependence, (2) conflict, (3) power, (4) future interdependence, and (5) information certainty. Throughout our studies, we develop and validate a multidimensional measure of subjective outcome interdependence that can be used in diverse situations and relationships – the Situational Interdependence Scale (SIS). We provide evidence for the construct, convergent and divergent, incremental and predictive validity of the SIS.
