Description: In Study 1, we found that perceptions of pseudo-profound sentences as ‘moving’ predicted participants’ ratings of profundity, and that these perceptions mediated the link between GSS scores and profundity ratings. Thus suggests that feelings of being moved/touched are connected to feelings of profundity. However, it might be that this connection is not specific to feelings of being moved/touched but shared by all positive emotions, or at least by all ‘self-transcendent’ positive emotions (such as awe and gratitude). In Study 2, we explore this possibility by investigating in more details participants’ emotional reactions to our pseudo-profound statements, and their relationship with participants’ feelings of profundity. The results suggest that states of being moved/touched are the best emotional predictors of feelings of profundity.
