The folder "Deutsch" includes all materials used and the folder "English" contains the utilized German materials translated from German to English by using a translation machine. The English documents are for illustration only and should not be used prior any professional language editing. The folder "Questionnaire" includes the questionnaire documentation exactly as programmed and used in the laboratory or online (only in German language). Note: A German and English description of the procedures can be found under the component "Our Procedures".

We only replicate the first study of the original paper. Similarities and Differences ---------------------------- **Similar to the original study are:** - we control for gender at the beginning of the study and adjust the - gender of the protagonist in the story (matched to participant's gender) - the utilized stories for the status and control condition, which were just translated into German. - We have used the Product descriptions and texts for treatment and control group from the appendix of the original study. - The cover story is partly described in the paper and can therefore be concluded. - The translation process included a translation from English to German (step 1), a backtranslation from German to English (step 2), and resolving of any discrepancies between the translated versions (step 3). **Differences to the original study are:** Up to the exploratory part, which begins after the product decision (end of the original study), everything equals the original procedures apart from potential differences due to the translation into German. - the control questions for the recall task (created by ourselves). - Based on the author’s advice: - the additional operationalization of altruism (created by ourselves). - therefor we created a story. The goal of this is to create a decision situation: The story is about a main character with a friend in need who has lost his job. The story ends with the main character being in a casino with his/her friend. There the main character wins money. After having read the story, the participants are first asked to write down what they are thinking about the story. Then, the participants can choose if and how much money they want to give to the friend in need (which is regarded as altruistic) or if they want to keep all of the money they have won. Only if the participants answer “yes” to the question of whether or not to donate money to the friend, participants can rate the amount of money they are willing to give away. - we will measure political orientation of the participants by asking to specify in how far they are conservative or liberal.
