Description: This project aims to characterize the formal and cognitive properties of linguistically encoded gender in English. This will be accomplished through the investigation of how gender is linguistically and cognitively processed during coreference resolution, and whether the associated processing behaviors vary across communities with different social exposure to gender (non-)conformity. In particular, this project focuses on how singular (specific) they is learned and processed by people within, adjacent to, and outside of transgender and non-binary communities.
