Description: Study Protocol Study Design The current study is a survey-based experiment. In this study participants will be randomly assigned to one of four conditions, whereby they will be asked to make judgments about a speaker whose statement they will read. The conditions are: a politically correct statement about a liberal target, a politically correct statement about a conservative target, a politically incorrect statement about a liberal target, and a politically incorrect statement about a conservative target. Several different target groups will be used: undocumented immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, Pro-Choice supporters, Pro-Life Supporters, poor white Americans, and religious American's in the "Bible Belt." All participants will then be asked their thoughts about the speaker who used or did not use political correctness, and to predict their position and language use in two topics not discussed in the original statement, as well as their confidence in these forecasts. Finally, they will be surveyed on their demographic characteristics. Study Site Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Participants and Recruitment Inclusion Criteria: " 18 years of age or older Sample Size Determination We plan to recruit 100 participants per condition, resulting in 800 participants total. Measures Key Dependent Variables: The extent to which the participants rate the authenticity and warmth of the speaker of the statement they read. Political Ideology: We will ask participants about their political ideology. The options will be: very conservative, slightly conservative, slightly liberal, or very liberal. Exploratory Competence: The extent to which the participants rate the competence of the speaker of the statement they read. Exploratory Predictions: We will ask participants to make predictions about the speaker's position and language use on two topics not previously discussed, as well as their confidence in these predictions. Planned Analysis We will analyze the results to determine if the condition impacted participant responses relating to the degree to which they believed their target was authentic and warm. To do this, we will run an ANOVA analysis with politically correct vs. incorrect as the DVs described in the "measures" section above. The primary analysis is 2 (Language: politically correct vs. politically incorrect) x 2(target type: liberal vs conservative target) x 2 (participant ideology). Hypothesis 1: We are predicting a main effect of language, such that politically correct speakers will be rated as warmer, but less authentic (more externally influenced). Hypothesis 2: We predict an interaction between language and participant ideology, such that conservative participants will rate politically correct and politically incorrect speakers as being equally warm, and liberal participants will rate politically correct and politically incorrect speakers as being equally authentic (externally influenced). Exploratory: We predict that participants will be more confident in their predictions of politically incorrect speakers.
