# 📘 Understanding the Human Side of AI in the Workplace (Phase 2) This project explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the lived experience of work. It builds on a [pilot study](https://osf.io/x8976/) and focuses on worker experiences of autonomy, job meaning, trust, emotional response, and surveillance in AI-integrated environments. The study also draws on emotional patterns observed in gig work—such as algorithmic oversight, reduced autonomy, and erosion of meaning—to inform the conceptual framework for the Phase 2 survey. --- ## 📚 Annotated Literature Summaries To provide transparency and further detail on the constructs explored in this study, the **annotated reference summaries** used to inform the design of **autonomy, trust, surveillance, and job meaning** have been made available as a supplementary file. 👉 [View Annotated Literature Summaries](https://osf.io/hyg9q/files/osfstorage) These summaries are foundational to the research framework and were developed based on insights from prior literature and refined during the Phase 2 data collection process. They provide context for how the constructs were shaped and how the study's survey instrument was designed. --- ## 📄 Survey Instrument The finalized Phase 2 survey instrument is available here: 👉 [Download the instrument (PDF)](https://osf.io/pgjna) Includes consent language, demographic and exposure items, Likert batteries, and open-ended questions. --- ## 🔬 Preregistration This study was preregistered on OSF and includes both confirmatory and exploratory hypotheses: 👉 [View the preregistration](https://osf.io/4256S) --- ## 🧭 Study Overview - **Pilot sample:** 17 (April 2025, exploratory only) - **Main sample target:** ~300 employed adults - **Design:** Cross-sectional survey (Typeform) - **Themes:** Autonomy, trust, stress, meaning, AI oversight, job security, and emotional dynamics originally observed in gig work (e.g., surveillance, autonomy loss, meaning erosion) - **Ethics:** Designed per CITI principles. Initial IRB review was submitted and voluntarily withdrawn before independent data collection. - **Current Status:** - **Phase 2 data collection** is complete, with over 300 responses analyzed. - **Working paper**: *“Measuring the Human Experience of AI in the Workplace”* (in prep). - **Dataset and code** will be published soon on **OSF**, alongside the working paper. --- ## 🧪 Future Plans - Working paper: *“Measuring the Human Experience of AI in the Workplace”* (in prep) - OSF/SSRN release planned - **Dataset and code** to be released soon on OSF - Optional Phase 3: qualitative interviews or longitudinal follow-up - **Practitioner Summary**: A 5-page white paper translating the findings into practical guidance for leaders, managers, and HR teams, focusing on human-centered organizational change (HCOC) in real-world settings. - **Journal Submission**: After the preprint is live, preparing a version for peer review in academic journals. - **Key Findings**: Bite-sized insights and takeaways will be shared regularly on the blog.
