Description: This study aims to examine the relationship between the perception of the estimated size of migrant population and attitudes towards them. In addition, it aims to investigate whether this relationship is moderated by symbolic universes that people hold. The study involves 3020 Italians who participated to a computer-assisted web interview (85.2% of the sample) or to a telephone interview. Results confirmed that the relationship between the estimated size of migrant population and perceived threat is moderated by symbolic universes, being stronger for participants holding a pessimistic as well as an idealizing symbolic universe. Some implications of the findings are discussed.
