This intellectual output (IO2) is designed to introduce learners to the theorizing behind text-based psychological assessments, and some of the approaches used in Natural Language Processing (NLP).
Importantly, it is *not* designed to be an series of tutorials on the current state-of-the-art in NLP, but rather a guide for social scientists to better understand some of the thinking behind NLP research, and how it has been applied to psychological questions in the past. The overall aim is *literacy*: if we are successful, a social scientist who is a novice to text-based assessment will complete the series of tutorials with a sufficiently solid foundation with which to design their own fruitful research projects. This may include their continuing to learn the more specific skills to execute analyses themselves *or* to effectively collaborate with computational scientists who specialize in NLP.
