Wiki Version:
This is the third study in a line of three study. This third study makes use of a 2x2 between subject design. The following are the different cells in our design: - Cup manipulation: Cold; Order: List 5 people before cup manipulation. - Cup manipulation: Cold; Order: List 5 people after cup manipulation. - Cup manipulation: Warm; Order: List 5 people before cup manipulation. - Cup manipulation: Warm; Order: List 5 people after cup manipulation. The temperature of the water that will be used in the cups will be maintained at a relatively constant level via thermoflasks. The thermoflasks will be filled with warm water warmed in a kettle and cold water from the facet. The water will be replaced after two hours. We will use a thermometer to keep track of the water temperature. When the water temperature will drop below 50 degrees Celsius, the water will be replaced in the warm condition, while it will be replaced if the water temperature will rise above 20 degrees Celsius in the cold condition. People that could potentially participate in our study will be approached by the test leader in the dining area of the campus' restaurant. They will be asked to participate in a study concerning consumer behavior and social situations. If they agree to participate, they will be guided to a computer that will be set up on a separate table. Participants will first complete the Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR) scale. Depending on the condition that they are in, they will list five people before or after holding a water cup (with warm or cold water). The computer will instruct participants when they are to hold the cup. A second test leader (who will not interact with participants outside of this) will hand them a cup with either warm or cold water, which participants will be instructed (via the computer) to hold in their hands for 30 seconds. Next, they will answer some questions regarding the cup, to keep the earlier mentioned purpose of the study (consumer behavior) realistic. Participants (no matter what order) will then be asked to answer the Inclusion of Other in Self, rating how close they feel to the people they mentioned. The last part of the survey will consist of filling in demographic information and a funneled debriefing, via which we will seek to discover whether participants know the true purpose of the study. All participants will be afterwards informed about the purpose of the study. We will perform measurements of the water temperature at random moments, and we will include this as a separate [file][1] on our project page. We will also include pictures of the materials used for both studies and a video of our procedure. The qualtrics version of our survey is available [here][2] (and its word export is available [here][3]). After one week, participants will also be sent the "Social Thermoregulation and Risk Avoidance Questionnaire" (STRAQ-1) for exploratory purposes.
