Description: In this collaborative project, PI's Michael Caterino (Clemson University) and Paul Marek (Virginia Tech University) plan to document the diversity of arthropods living in leaf litter at the highest elevations of southern Appalachia. The project will involve intensive fieldwork, sorting and imaging of all morphospecies of arthropods found, and metabarcoding (large-scale cytochrome oxidase I and 16S DNA sequencing) of thousands of specimens. These data will provide a rich foundation for analyzing the uniqueness and future responses of these communities to environmental changes.
