Wiki Version:
The main hypothesis of this study was that people will misattribute the a-ha! Feeling that comes when solving a problem with the truth of their solution. To do this, participants were randomly assigned to answer trivia questions (e.g. What bird is found in the wild on every continent in the world); in one group, they were asked to unscramble the answer (e.g. malfoing  flamingo) while in the other group they were not. The dependent variable was how trutful they thought the answer would be on a 1-12 pt scale with higher ratings indicating a more truthful statement. Participants were randomly assigned to take the study as part of the first or second 750 batch of participants. Consistent with our pre-registration plan (found at https://osf.io/7rqfw/) we analyzed those who took part in the 2nd 750 first, followed by those who took part in the 1st 750, then combined them into a full analysis. The magnitude of the effect was not different between the two 750s (F (1, 1493) = .001, p > .98). 2nd 750 The 2nd 750 data was opened and unblended at 7:08am on December 30, 2019. It was analyzed at 7:26am on December 30, 2019. Consistent with our prediction, those who were asked to unscramble the word found the trivia question more truthful (M = 6.305, SD = 2.024, n = 346) than if they were not asked to unscramble the word (M = 5.425, SD = 1.462, n = 408; t (615.774) = 6.732, p < .001, d = .505, 95%CI = .65 to .359). 1st 750 The 1st 750 dataset was opened at 7:38am on December 30, 2019. Data was analyzed at 7:52am on December 30, 2019. Again, consistent with our predictions, those who were asked to unscramble the answer found the solution to be more truthful (M = 6.977, SD = 2.415, n = 344) than if they had not been asked to unscramble the word (M = 6.092, SD = 1.881, n = 399; t (643.975) = 5.506, p < .001, d = .413, 95%CI = .558 to .267). Full 1500 Consistent with what was seen in the two separate 750s, in the overall dataset, participants who were asked to unscramble the answer found the trivia question more truthful (M = 6.64, SD = 2.251, n = 690) than if they were not asked to unscramble the word (M = 5.755, SD = 1.714, n = 807; t (1274.007) = 8.444, p < .001, d = .447, 95%CI = .55 to .344).
