Description: Body-object interaction (BOI) denotes the extent to which the body interacts with the object referenced by a word. Higher BOI has been shown to lead to more efficient word recognition. Mochizuki et al. (2014) collected BOI rating for 397 nouns characterized by high imageability and familiarity. Building upon this work, the current research extended the scope by gathering BOI rating for 5,736 nouns, adjectives, and verbs. We collected the ratings from 1,265 native Japanese speakers through web surveys and examined their correlation with existing lexical characteristics. Our data revealed a positively skewed distribution of BOI ratings that the overall rating tended to be low. Furthermore, BOI ratings showed a moderate correlations with both imageability and abstractness. A moderate positive correlation was also found with the 148 nouns collected by Mochizuki et al. (2014). These results indicate that the BOI ratings collected in this study have a certain degree of validity.
