The Comprehensive Feeding Parenting Practices Questionnaire, originally developed by Musher-Eizenman and Holub (2007), was translated into European Portuguese to assess parents’ feeding practices among parents of children aged 5 to 10.
A request to translate the questionnaire into European Portuguese was made to Prof. Dara R. Musher-Eizenman. Upon permission from the author, the instrument was translated into European Portuguese by two researchers with a PhD in psychology, Portuguese native speakers with a very high level of proficiency in English. The Portuguese translation was then back-translated into English by another researcher with a PhD in psychology, also a Portuguese native speaker with a very high level of proficiency in English. The three researchers compared both versions and found them to be semantically equivalent.
A minor adaptation was made. In the European Portuguese version, the example kool-aid on item 4 was not included as powdered soft drink mixes are not popular in Portugal. Instead, ice tea, a popular sugary non-carbonated beverage, was included as an example. A research fellow then performed a small try-out of the adapted version. Parents (mothers and fathers) of 18 children, boys, and girls, aged 5-to-10 filled out the questionnaire and were part of an individual cognitive interview. The parents reported no difficulties regarding the instrument instructions, the item contents or rating scale. No further adaptations nor adjustments were made. Hence, the final version of the questionnaire includes 49 items, 13 items regarding the frequency of feeding practices, and 36 items regarding the level of (dis)agreement related to feeding parenting practices, to be rated on a 5-point rating scale, from never to always in the frequency scale, and from disagree to agree in the (dis)agreement scale.
