Description: Mathematical modelling is a key competence in modern scientific-based societies. Mathematical modelling means that mathematical concepts and methods are applied to solve economical, biological, physical, psychological, everyday problems etc. (Niss, 1994). Thus, it is important that persons have modelling competences to come of age in the modern society. One important factor for choosing a study program or a career in the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), is motivation, e. g. interest, self-concept, etc. (Aeschlimann et al., 2016). Thus, to support students to choose such a career in the field of STEM, mathematics lessons should aim on students developing motivation concerning mathematics or concerning modelling tasks in particular. As there is a lack in STEM-specialists, fostering students modelling competences and motivation is of great importance for society.
Modelling process and validation competences The process of applying mathematical concepts and methods to realistic situations can be described by a modelling cycle. For example, Blum and Leiss (2007) proposed seven steps which persons go through in their modelling process: understanding the situation, simplifying the situation, setting up a mathematical model, working in this model, interpreting …
