Wiki Version:
Prosody clearly influences syntactic attachment, as a prosodic boundary between an attachment site and an ambiguous constituent decreases attachment across the boundary (e.g., Price et al. 1991, Carlson et al. 2001, Watson & Gibson 2005). Pitch accents have also been shown to affect attachment, with a modifier being drawn to an accented attachment site (Schafer et al. 1996, Lee & Watson 2011, Carlson & Tyler 2018). But there are other focus indicators besides accents, including focus particles like “only,” and a sentence may contain more than one indicator. This project explored the interaction of multiple focus indicators, i.e., what happens in attachment when multiple pitch accents, or pitch accents plus “only,” all indicate focus. We found an additive pattern in which all focus indicators affected attachment regardless of their type and position, with no interaction between the indicators. Hi all! David here. I'd like to try to chat with people via Zoom as well, but I haven't actually hosted a session before. If you'd like to try to it out though, here's the link: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/3843209989
