The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has launched an autonomous shuttle service between downtown Providence, RI and Olneyville Square, a neighborhood with limited public transit options. The shuttle service is free to the public, planning to offer between 4 and 6 shuttles at any given time, and will run until May 2020 with the option of renewal. Brown University and partners 3x3, Stae, and Bits & Atoms have been authorized by the state government to conduct research on the pilot program to understand riders’ and regulators attitudes toward and uses of Autonomous Vehicles. The purpose of research on the pilot project is to inform the state’s long-term planning for regulation of and investment in Autonomous Vehicles and related transit innovations.
