Description: The quality of automated indexing in Medline and its impact on information retrieval are topics of growing concern for health sciences librarians (HSLs) worldwide. Since 2002, the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) has been a pioneer in applying semi-automated methods using the Medical Text Indexer, or MTI, to index publications. As of 2022, all new MEDLINE records were fully indexed using automated methods, with human review for certain subject areas, and other records reviewed at random. The aim of this review is to examine and analyze the key drivers, benefits and challenges of automated indexing in Medline, and its likely impact on the search practices of HSLs.
