Wiki Version:
This component contains data used in the article "'I Hope I Get It': Impact of Tony Award Nominations and Wins on Broadway Production Longevity." These data were used to perform a survival analysis, and **I encourage others to use the data for teaching and research purposes. I place no limits on data use**, though I do request that users cite my original article (citation at bottom) when publicly reporting analyses. The dataset contains information about every open-ended production (i.e., a production that has no set closing date when it opened) on Broadway since January 1, 1998. A limited number of close-ended productions are also included if they (a) closed at least 1 week before the intended closing data, or (b) closed more than 2 months after the intended closing data. These close-ended productions were included because their number of performances were determined in a manner very similar to open-ended shows. There are four files in this component: - BroadwayStats 10232017.sav: This is the data file used in the analysis for the article. - BroadwayStats 09162018.sav: This is an updated version of the file with data accurate through September 16, 2018. - BroadwayStats 06112019.sav: This is an updated version of the file with data accurate through June 11, 2019. - BroadwayStats 09082020.sav: This is an updated version of the file with data accurate through the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic (March 11, 2020). Date in file name is the date when the file was created. COVID variables were added at this point. The data file will be updated periodically. Variables of note: - Production Number = ID number for each individual production - ShowNumber = ID number for each play/musical. Shows that were mounted - Closed = production was closed as of the date of file creation (0 = No, 1 = Yes). Shows with a value of zero have are censored. - Total performances = Number of performances for the production as of their closing date or (for shows still open) the data of the file creation/updating. - Musical = Production is a musical (0 = No, 1 = Yes) - Revival = Production is classified as a revival on ibdb.com (0 = No, 1 = Yes) - Cast_Size = Number of actors in the cast (not including understudies, swings, animals, or child alternates) - Month_Opened = Month of opening night, starting at August (coded as 0) and ending in July (coded as 11). Higher numbers indicate a later time in the Broadway season. - Year_Opened = Year of opening night, minus 2000. (This centers the variable at the year 2000; negative numbers indicate shows that opened in the 1990's.) - Cap_Week1 = Percentage of available seats sold in the first full week of performances (i.e., without previews). - datelink.1 = Data that the first full week of performances ended. - Censored_Start = Show's opening night is censored. This is a label marking which shows in the dataset opened before January 1, 1998. - COVID_Open = Show had officially had its opening performance before the COVID19 pandemic shut Broadway down on March 12, 2020. - COVID_Perf = The number of performances that a production had completed before the COVID19 pandemic shut Broadway down on March 12, 2020. - COVID_Closed = Show closed permanently because of the COVID19 pandemic. Show must have had an open-ended run or a close-ended run with a planned closing date after March 11, 2020, to be labeled as closing because of the pandemic. - TNom_* = These variables indicate the number of performances a production had already mounted when it received a particular Tony nomination. Productions are only eligible for a Tony nomination or award in their first season, so all these numbers are lower than 416 (the theoretical maximum number of possible performances a production can have in a year). Because all nominations were announced on the same day, a production has the same number of mounted performances for every nomination. The value "999999" indicates that the show did NOT receive that particular Tony nomination. - Tony_* = These variables indicate the number of performances a production had already mounted when it won a particular Tony Award. Productions are only eligible for a Tony nomination or award in their first season, so all these numbers are lower than 416 (the theoretical maximum number of possible performances a production can have in a year). Because all nominations were announced on the same day, a production has the same number of mounted performances for every Tony Award win. The value "999999" indicates that the show did NOT receive that particular Tony Award. References Warne, R. T. (2018).
