Description: This lightning talk will present the author’s work on identification, review, and removal of personally identifiable information (PII) and other potentially sensitive information in digital archives as a 2018 Summer Fellow at the Library Innovation Lab at Harvard University. The author informally reviewed existing work and publications in this domain, discussed needs and existing workflows with digital preservation practitioners at Harvard and MIT, and developed a prototype local web application called Bulk Reviewer, using bulk_extractor, Django, and Vue.js. The author will discuss the work done on Bulk Reviewer to date, as well as thinking around how to develop the tool further so that it can meet the needs of librarians, archivists, and others who seek to share digital archives and datasets while respecting privacy, the law, and regulations around sensitive information.
