Description: This pre‐registration outlines the research goals and analytical strategies to be implemented in our manuscript to be submitted to the special issue in Appetite, titled “The Psychology of Meat Eating & Vegetarianism”. Our manuscript will contribute to this call by using cross‐sectional and longitudinal data from the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study (NZAVS) to: (1) provide prevalence information about dietary preferences (i.e., omnivores, vegetarians and vegans; or veg*ns) of a nationally representative sample of the New Zealand population, (2) identify demographic and psychological variables associated with dietary preferences, (3) provide information about the number of New Zealanders who transitioned from meat‐based to plant‐based diets (or vice‐versa), and (4) examine whether five theoretically selected variables (i.e., concerns about animals, health and the environment; gender and conservatism) significantly contribute to the likelihood of transitioning from one dietary preference to another.
