The Village-Integrated Eye Worker Trial II (VIEW II) is a large cluster-randomized trial in Nepal designed to determine whether a community-based screening program for asymptomatic eye diseases employing optical coherence tomography, intraocular pressure measurement, and enhanced linkage-to-care can improve visual acuity in a population. A door-to-door census with visual acuity testing of adults 60 years and older is conducted in all study communities at baseline. Participants meeting referral criteria are referred for follow-up diagnosis and care. Half of the communities are subsequently randomized to receive the screening program and the other half to no further intervention. Four years after implementation of the intervention, masked outcome assessors will conduct a final census to collect data on the primary outcome, visual acuity. This trial is conducted by the Francis I. Proctor Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco with partners Bharatpur Eye Hospital and the Seva Foundation. The trial is funded by the National Eye Institute, a branch of the National Institutes of Health. (Grant number: UG1 EY028097). This trial is registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03752840).
