Description: Choropleth maps use color to visually communicate data, where dark-colored regions are used to represent large quantities or high event rates. When data is highly correlated with population density, using choropleth maps to visually communicate spatial data results in misleading patterns, which may be overcome through the use of statistical techniques. Our research explores peoples takeaways from maps that use surprise and suppression to offset biases in choropleth maps.
