Wiki Version:
The present study will be a follow up to [IJzerman, Schrama, and Pronk][1]. The present follow-up study will serve to 1) replicate and 2) extend the previous two studies. Prior Studies: The aim of this research project is to investigate the relationship between experienced temperature and thoughts about social relationship. In our first study, we used an inductive approach to explore *which* questions of an established attachment scale (the Experiences in Close Relationship Scale; ECR) moderated the link between temperature and thinking about close others. We found that people who have positive experiences in past relationships are more likely to think of close others after holding something cold (vs. warm), while the opposite is true for those who have negative past relationship experiences. Study 2 successfully replicated the moderation effect of Study 1. These positive experiences are captured in a subset of three items of the ECR, which we refer to as *Relationship Closeness Regulation* (RCR). The RCR consists of the following items: 1. My romantic partner makes me doubt myself. 2. I feel comfortable sharing my private thoughts and feelings with my partner. 3. I find it easy to depend on romantic partners. Present Study: The first focus of the present study is to replicate the previous two studies. Although we will measure the entire ECR, we will seek to confirm the hypothesis that the RCR subset moderates the temperature-thought link. The second focus is to extend the study, by excluding a potential alternative hypothesis. Specifically, we will investigate whether temperature affects *who* participants think about, or whether temperature also affects *how close* participants feel to the close others they mention. In order to investigate this issue, we included an additional condition in the present study. In this condition participants we will ask participants to recall five people *before* they are exposed to the warm/cold cup of water, whereas participants in the standard condition (replication of the previous study) will be asked to recall five people *after* they are exposed to the warm/cold cup of water.
