Description: Evidence from a large body of research indicates that lapse risk in those attempting to quit or reduce harmful substance use is dynamic, multi-causal and idiosyncratic. Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) have the goal of addressing the dynamically changing needs of individuals in real-time. The aim of this review is to synthesise evidence on JITAIs for harmful substance use, and provide an overview of their decision points, tailoring variables, decision rules, content, engagement and effectiveness. It is expected that findings from this review will help to inform future JITAI development and evaluation.
