Wiki Version:

This project aims to investigate phonetic correlates of foreign accent. Data are from the Speech Accent Archive hosted by the GMU linguistics program.

We asked 110 native speakers of American English to rate the accentedness exhibited in 100 short audio snippets. We then analyzed how accentedness correlates with various phonetic features.

Out findings could potentially be beneficial to English learners and ESL/EFL teachers. It is also our hope that the findings could help design more efficient speech recognition systems.

This is an on-going project. Our preliminary results have been published by the Research in Language journal earlier this year (2018). A copy of the paper is attached here. Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

We could be reached on this platform or via emails at zgao@gmu.edu (Zhiyan Gao) or weinberg@gmu.edu (Prof. Steven Weinberger)

Zhiyan Gao
[1]: https://mfr.osf.io/export?url=https://files.osf.io/v1/resources/uj4xq9f8vg/providers/osfstorage/5c0bc39e6be62d001b443335?direct=&mode=render&version=1&format=2400x2400.jpeg
