We were unable to replicate the finding that being primed with an implausible decline causes people to become more conservative.
In the direct replication, participants indicated they were just as conservative (the average of self-described conservative and likelihood of voting conservative) if they were asked to endorse statement about implausible societal decline (M = -.191, SD = 1.727) than if they had been asked to endorse statements about plausible societal decline (M = -.287, SD = 1.718, *t*(1497.99) = -1.079, *p* > .28). Furthermore, the direction of effect was reversed from that of the original investigation.
A separate analysis was carried out to see if changes would have occured on one of the dependent variables (how conservative are you? How likely are you to vote for a conservative?).
This supplementary analysis found no effect of asking someone to endorse statments about implausible societal decline on either how conservative they are or how likely they are to vote for a conservative (*F*(2,1497) < 1).
