Clausal embeddings have been shown in different languages to be able to
undergo nominalization via a D(eterminer) such as Greek *to* ‘the’ that can
combine with an embedded clause (Roussou 1994). Clauses can undergo
nominalization via a D in Spanish (Picallo 2002), Hebrew (Kastner 2015),
and Persian (Farudi 2007). Similar nominalization patterns have not been
observed, however, in certain Germanic languages. This paper argues that a
clause can undergo nominalization in Dutch too and that this takes
place underlyingly in cases where a clause is doubled by a pronoun. The
analysis of clausal prolepsis as nominalization is supported by a range of
new Dutch data.
