A scoping literature and website review to give a broad understanding about online support groups for family caregivers/carers.
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the conceptualisation of online support groups (OSG). Research into why family caregivers engage and don’t engage in OSG and what makes the groups supportive spaces is needed to develop OSG as a specific eHealth tool to provide social support for family caregivers. This research will not only have theoretical importance but also assist organisations in their practical support offerings for family caregivers. Understanding the mechanisms through which caregiver interventions may have beneficial effects on support recipients is an under-studied area of family caregiving. Therefore, in order to develop a broader understanding of OSG, we will completed a scoping literature review and web review of support groups for family caregivers online.
The primary objective of the scoping review is to provide a broad overview of the topic (Peters et al, 2017). Areas of interest include what is meant by a support group in an online context, how have groups changed with the development of the digital age, what are the characteristics of OSG and what categories of social support are most prevalent in OSG?
