Wiki Version:
Implementation of the official protocol --------------------------------------- **Experimenters** Three to four female experimenters will be involved in testing. All experimenters will be trained on the protocol by the Principal Investigator (vanDellen). All experimenters have previous experience running similar protocols that involve testing only on a computer. We will do our best to keep experimenters blind to condition. We have changed the names of the eprime files from easy and hard to cond1 and cond2. Additionally, we are using the newest members of our lab who will not have had as much training in ego depletion research overall. We will not tell our experimenters the hypotheses or true purposes of the study. At the completion of data collection we will interview our experimenters regarding their thoughts about the experiment and differences between conditions--this information will be shared in the lab log. **Piloting / training** Pilot testing will be conducted to confirm that the program is working as expected. Each experimenter will run one other lab member through the protocol. Pilot participants will not be included in the final data set. **Recruiting** Participants will be recruited from the undergraduate participant pool at the University of Georgia. All participants will therefore be enrolled in a Psychology class (or related field). The study will be posted on a website where participants can choose which experiments to complete for partial course credit. The study will be advertised as being about word and number recognition and reaction time. **Sample, subjects, and randomization** A total of 180 participants (N = 90 per condition) will be collected. Once 180 participants have been collected, data collection will stop. A small number of participants may be collected above 180 to account for potential no-shows by participants. All participants who sign up for the study will be invited to complete it, even if the total sample size has surpassed 180. Participants will be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old. The sample will include both males and females and will aim for a ratio of between 30 to 70% female. Only native English speakers will be included in the analyses. Participants will be informed that study eligibility requires English as a native language. After signing the informed consent, but prior to the eprime tasks, the experimenter will collect gender, age, and native language information from each participant. All participants will be randomly assigned to condition using random numbers generated at randomizer.org. Participants will be randomly assigned in blocks of 10. Participants who do not meet the eligibility requirements will be excluded from data analyses. Collecting a large sample size allows for the small number of participants who may not accurately self-report their eligibility for the study to be excluded without significant effects on statistical power. Thus, participants who are excluded after the study will not be replaced; once data collection stops according to the stop rule, no additional data will be collected. **Setting/Lab/Equipment** Participants will be tested in isolation (as specified by the protocol). A private room (10x20 feet) containing a single desktop computer will be used for data collection. Participants will report to a larger experimental area where they will complete consent and be asked to leave their belongings (including cellphones) in a secure location. They will then be escorted to the private room by an experimenter. The room has a door that can close, ensuring full privacy for the participant. Instead of using a bell, our experimenter will sit outside of the room and wait for the participant to indicate they are finished. Participants will complete the study on a private Dell computer. We have access to E-Prime 2 through a colleague on campus. This is a slightly different version than that used to create the experiment files. Therefore, to run the program our research assistants must choose the E-run option allowing us to run older files. The version we have is 2.0.10.242(200). Under files on the implementation page I have uploaded a screenshot of the E-Run Resolver that allows our experimenters to choose our version of E-Prime. **Debriefing** Our IRB approved our study with each participant being debriefed so we are following option 2 in the step by step procedure.
