Description: The goal of this project is to explore the relationship between emotion regulation and chronic pain. To achieve this, we recruited individuals both with and without chronic pain to participate in the SMART Emotions study. Participation involved completing a screening survey, a baseline online survey, two online executive functioning assessments, and an intensive ecological momentary assessment protocol. Participants without chronic pain were also invited to a subsequent laboratory assessment. The data collected will be used to address several research questions, including how emotion regulation is impacted when chronic pain co-occurs with depression, how regulatory variability and flexibility change across the lifespan, and how impairments in executive functioning may contribute to regulatory deficits as a potential underlying mechanism. Further details on the specific studies can be found in the registration section.
