Description: Orthodontic treatment involves the correction of crooked teeth or malocclusion using orthodontic appliances or braces. Ever since the modern era of orthodontic treatment began at the beginning of the 20th century, orthodontists have debated whether malocclusion can and/or should be treated with or without the extraction of permanent teeth and in particular premolars. Over a century later the debate continues without much sign or expectation that this issue will be resolved soon. We believe that now is a good time to examine the literature, review the findings and propose a way forward for research in this area by undertaking this scoping review.
