We will be conducting Study 1 with participants from the Netherlands and Study 2 with participants from Amazon MTurk. In the original paper, Study 2 was conducted in an American lab. In order to try to replicate as faithfully as possible, we will conduct the study via MTurk with an American sample. **Notes for Study 1 - Including changes to the method** - The lead author of the study encouraged us to probe participants in our cultural sample for comfort foods. We conducted a pilot study, in which our students invited others via Facebook to provide their comfort foods. 66 native Dutch people responded, of which 33 saw chocolate as comfort food, 13 potato chips, 2 cookies, and 4 indicated to have a decreased appetite (14 individuals all reported different food types, ranging from an apple to lasagne). In the original study, participants first completed a questionnaire on whether they saw chicken soup as a comfort food. However, Below is a summary of these changes in Study 1: - Chicken soup is changed into chocolate as a comfort food - In the original study, participants rated the food 6 weeks in advance in terms of how much they considered it a comfort food. Because we will have a field experiment, participants will do this *after* the study. - Approach of participants will be in our university's cafeteria. Every 3rd person will be approached (so as to keep a consistent recruitment procedure). - Compared to the original study, we will also add to what extent participants find chocolate unhealthy (as a potential moderator; this also came forward in our e-mail contact with Troisi). Study 2 will be replicated more closely to the original study. In order to keep as close to the original experiment as possible, we will now recruit participants via Amazon MTurk (instead of a Dutch sample). **Power Analyses (Conducted with G*Power)** - Below are the power analyses for both studies. Because the environments people experience on MTurk are far from standardized (and thus have greater error) we will assume that the effect sizes are .75 times their original size. We should note that this is a hunch. - Study 1, Cohen's f = .20. For 95%, and alpha = .05, we will need n = 390. - Study 2, Cohen's f = .27 (75% of original power). For 95%, and alpha = .05, we will need n = 240.
