This was a multi-session study in which children (7 year olds) and adults learned new Mandarin words. We compared training with pictures only versus training with pictures and diacritics. We tested generalization of tone learning in discrimination and word repetition tasks using novel (untrained) nouns. Pre-test performance was compared to post-test performance in Session 2 (7 year olds and adults) and Session 4 (7 years only) **Session 1** - Discrimination test - Word repetition test - English noun introduction task - Noun training task **Session 2** - Noun training task - Discrimination test - Word repetition test - Two-picture forced choice test (trained nouns only) **Session 3 (7 year olds only)** - Noun training task **Session 4 (7 year olds only)** - Noun training task - Discrimination test - Word repetition test - Two-picture forced choice test (trained nouns only)
