Description: Agreement on what is considered morally ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ is vital for societal functioning. Investigations into the many factors contributing to differences in moral sense and moral judgement have been going on for decades with research efforts mainly focussing on human moral agents. However, since the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing, its ability to make moral decisions has become a focus of interest. In a series of online studies we aim to investigate how humans of different cultural backgrounds (Western European vs. Chinese) evaluate moral decisions made by human vs. artificial agents. The project includes fictional high-stake moral scenarios with potential life-or-death consequences as well as low-stake dilemmas with potentially negative (but not fatal) outcomes.
