Short text: Looking for data? Let us show you good places to start searching! Event page: The Data Sources for STEM videos (Options for Remote STEM Research videos 20-24, posting weekdays July 15-21) will discuss common places to find existing datasets for STEM fields. Watch the videos and bring your questions to the STEM Services team (link: https://libraries.ou.edu/content/stem-services)! Registration is required to receive Zoom link. - Video 20, overview - Video + voiceover: "Hi everyone, this is Claire Curry at the University of Oklahoma libraries. Welcome to another installment of Options for Remote STEM research series that covers using existing datasets. Here in videos 20-24, we'll talk about common data sources for all the STEM departments we cover." - To do general searching for data, the strategies are going to be similar as we've talked about beofre in videos 9 (spatial dataset searching) and 13 (literature searching). For data it can help to start broad to find repositories, but narrower if you are looking for datasets associated with papers. - In the next four videos, we'll hear from all four STEM librarians about specific data repositories and sources in their fields. - This will be Amanda Schilling for Mathematics, Meteorology, and Physics & Astronomy; Brent Tweedy for Chemistry & Biochemistry; Health & Exercise Science; and Psychology; Claire Curry for Biology, Geography & Environmental Sustainability, and Microbiology & Plant biology; and James Bierman for Aviation; Engineering; and Geology & Geophysics. - Again, this is a great time to book an appointment with your subject librarian to search for your data or learn about repositories that may be more specialized in your area of research. - Video 21, Amanda's departments - Claire: Amanda Schilling is the subject liaison to Mathematics, Meteorology, and Physics & Astronomy. She's going to show us some common data sources used by researchers in her departments. - Amanda (maximum 3 mins please) - Hi, my name is Amanda Schilling. [if comfortable: My pronouns are ... ] - Data sources that all three departments might use: - fill in here - My background is in Physics and Astronomy, so I'll start with datasets for those research areas. Some of these databases have an SQL-like search and retrieval option - Space Telescope data - https://archive.stsci.edu/access-mast-data - NASA Open Data Portal - https://data.nasa.gov - Extragalactic database - https://ned.ipac.caltech.edu/ - Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) - https://www.sdss.org/ - SIMBAD Astronomical Database (Strasbourg astronomical Data Center) - http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/ - Mathematics - Fill in sources - Meteorology - Fill in sources - Claire: once again, here is Amanda's contact info. He's going to show us some common data sources used by researchers in his departments. - Brent (maximum 3 mins please) - Hi, my name is Brent Tweedy. [if comfortable: My pronouns are ... ] - Data sources that all three departments might use: - fill in, if any - My background is in biology, so I'll start with datasets for Health & Exercise Sciences. - Fill in sources - Chemistry & Biochemistry - Fill in sources - Psychology - Fill in sources - Claire: once again, here is Brent's contact info.
