Past research has investigated the effects that emotions have on ethics in decision-making. Winterich, Mittal, and Morales (2014) report a number of experiments, which all find that induced disgust increases unethical behavior. They argue that the mechanism behind these findings is an increased desire for self-protection on the part of disgusted individuals. However, their support for a positive relationship between disgust and unethical behavior runs counter in spirit to other findings that feelings of disgust elicit stronger commendation and harsher judgements of unethical behaviors. Motivated by this puzzle, we are directly replicating three studies from Winterich et al.
