Description: This paper introduces a new dataset of Islamist terrorist attacks in Western countries from 9/11 to the end of 2017. The dataset includes small-scale attacks as well as large-scale ones, identifies the origin country for a large number of perpetrators, and provides an accompanying link for each attack (thereby permitting third-party verification). Across Western countries, both the number of attacks and the number of casualties are positively associated with other measures of Islamist terrorism, with the percentage of Muslims in the population, and with at least one indicator of military intervention in the Middle East (when taking into account total population size). Across origin countries, the number of perpetrators is positively associated with the estimated number of Muslim nationals living in the West.
