Wiki Version:
This project consisted of two experiments. Experiment 1 measured the acceptability of 292 implicit causality verbs in American Sign Language. Videos of these verb signs are available in the 'Transitivity Acceptability' folder. Acceptability scores were calculated for the verbs based on ratings from five ASL signers. Acceptability Scores and thematic roles of English translation equivalents are reported in Appendix (columns B and D). Verbs that were accepted by 3 or more signers as acceptable in transitive contexts were used as stimuli in Experiment 2. Eight signers completed 239 sentences (NP verb NP because ...) containing implicit causality verbs. The continuations were coded for which referent was mentioned next after 'because'. Raw counts and aggregated bias scores are reported in Appendix (columns E-N), as is the thematic role construction most frequently used with the ASL verb in the data (column C).
