Wiki Version:
METHOD & PROCEDURE PARTICIPANTS We have set our sample size at 120 (60 per condition). Consistent with the Verkoeijen replication proposal, we have chosen this sample size to meet the requirements in the approved research protocol of at least 50 participants per condition even if we need to exclude 17% of the participants in a condition. This allows for a comfortable margin as we are unlikely to need to exclude many participants. Our participants will be drawn from the undergraduate Psychology pool at the University of Maine. The undergraduate subject pool demographics closely match the inclusion criteria for the current study: 58% Women, 93% 18-25, 93% White. Ideally for this protocol, the state of Maine has extremely low diversity. We will run participants who are non-white or over 25 but will exclude their data from the main analyses. Our experiment sign up system precludes access by those under 18 and allows us to post recruitment criteria. Thus, only participants with normal or corrected to normal vision and hearing will be allowed to participate. In the unlikely case that we do not have 50 participants per condition due to exclusions, we will continue data collection until this minimum is met. A call will be posted on Sona our departmental experiment sign up tool. If recruitment is slow, an email will be sent to members of the subject pool with the Sona description and a link for signing up for the study. The following text will be used: Title: A study on memory and perception Sona Description: We are looking for participants for a study on memory and perception. The experiment will consist of several tasks. You will receive 1 credit for taking part in this experiment. Normal or corrected to normal vision and hearing is required. MATERIALS We will use the critical video, the line-up image, the instructions and the filler task (crossword puzzle) of the original study. The only differences between our planned study and the original study are the instructions in the control condition (participants will have to name countries and capitals instead of US states and capitals), and that all tasks (excluding the crossword puzzle) will take place on a computer (see description of program in "code" node). The change to countries and capitals from states and capitals is in line with the required protocol for replication. DESIGN Participants will view a test video of a bank robbery on a computer and immediately afterward they will spend 5 minutes either describing the robber (experimental condition) or listing countries and their capitals (control condition) on the computer (with a prompt after 3 min). They then complete an unrelated filler task for 20 minutes (an easy crossword puzzle on paper). Finally, they view an image depicting 8 people on the computer and select the one who was in the bank robbery video and rate their confidence in their selection. TESTING LOCATION Participants will be tested individually in small sound proof rooms in the McCoy Lab. Detailed information about the test rooms will be provided under the “Lab setup” node. EXPERIMENTERS The team that will conduct the replication consists of Shannon McCoy (Assistant Professor of Psychology), doctoral students Ryan Pickering and Lauren Hawthorne, undergraduate honors student Arielle Rancourt, and undergraduate research assistants Kara-Beth Farrell and Casey Carson. Shannon McCoy, Ryan Pickering and Lauren Hawthorne have extensive experience with experimental methods and both Arielle Rancourt and Kara Beth Farrell have worked as research assistants in the lab for over a year. Weekly meetings are scheduled to discuss data collection and prevent “drift” from approved protocols. DATA COLLECTION Participants will be recruited through the Psychology Department experimental sign up web portal on Sona Systems. The post for the experiment will state only that it is a study of perception and memory, and that normal or corrected to normal vision and hearing are required. Participants will be told the study will not last more than 1 hour and will be compensated with 1 credit toward the class requirement. We used an online randomizer to randomly assign participant numbers to experimental conditions and participant numbers will be run in ascending order (1 to 120). Participants will complete a short informed consent form per our Institutional Review Board Policy. Following the informed consent, participants will begin the study with all instructions, tasks and timing conducted on a computer using the Qualtrix survey tool. Only the crossword will be completed on paper per protocol instructions. Upon study completion, participants will complete items to assess what they believed the purpose of the study to be, their level of awareness regarding the study prior to participation, and demographic information. DATA EXCLUSION The research assistant will keep a lab log of each experimental session. On the basis of the lab log data may be excluded prior to examining the recognition task performance. Data from a participant may be excluded if: they did not follow instructions on the experimental or control task; they did not complete all tasks; the Experimenter incorrectly administered the task or instructions. We will collect data from 120 (60 per condition) participants. Consistent with the Verkoeijen replication proposal, we have chosen this sample size to meet the requirements in the approved research protocol of at least 50 participants per condition even if we need to exclude 17% of the participants in a condition. This allows for a comfortable margin as we are unlikely to need to exclude many participants as our protocol is timed and administered on a computer and our subject pool matches the demographics required by the protocol (93% White and 93% 18-25). In the very unlikely event that we need to exclude more than 20 people (bringing the sample size below the 50 required for the protocol), we will pseudorandomly assign participants to condition to meet the minimum protocol goal of 50 subjects per condition with the constraint of equal n per condition. Any excluded data and the reason for exclusion will be identified and included in the data sets. PROCEDURE We will use the exact Procedure from the approved protocol: • Participants will be recruited to participate in a study of memory and perception • Participants will be pseudorandomly assigned to the experimental condition or the control condition with an equal number of participants being assigned to each of the two conditions. • Participants will be told: “This experiment consists of several tasks. First, please pay close attention to the following video” • Participants will view a 30-second video depicting a bank robbery. • Participants will receive different instructions depending on their condition assignment: Experimental Condition: “Please describe the appearance of the bank robber in as much detail as possible. It is important that you attempt to describe all of his different facial features. Please write down everything that you can think of regarding the bank robber’s appearance. It is important that you try to describe him for the full 5 minutes” Control Condition: “Please name as many countries and their capitals as you can. It is important that you try to name them for the full 5 minutes”
